The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a national initiative to offer accurate, secure, and free tax help, to lower income households. The VITA program offers free tax help to qualified individuals who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing. Their comprehensive training results in the highest accuracy rate of all tax preparation services, including big name paid preparers. This means tax filers can rest assured they are getting all the credits they qualify for including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and other valuable credits.
You may be eligible to get your taxes prepared at a VITA site for free, if one of the following is true:
- You speak limited or no English
- You are a person with a disability
- You are age 60 or older
- Your annual household income is less than $67,000 or you have experienced a financial hardship.
Branches offers VITA services year-round and individuals may find the closest VITA location online or by calling 211.
In addition to tax preparation, VITA sites also offer connections to other valuable free services like financial coaching, healthcare marketplace navigators, and access to low-cost traditional banking products.
