Charlinda

Charlinda has been part of Branches since early elementary school, where she found a strong community and became actively involved in programs like choir and academic support. In fifth grade, she stepped into leadership as a Branches Buddy, mentoring younger students and discovering a passion for serving others.

The transition to middle school and the isolation of COVID created new challenges, but Charlinda remained connected to Branches, where the encouragement of staff and friends helped her stay engaged. As she entered high school, Charlinda faced another difficult transition. Her grades declined and her attitude shifted. Because leadership at Branches requires strong character and academic commitment, Charlinda was not selected to serve as a Summer Shade Guide that summer. Staff, who had built a strong relationship with her over the years, had honest and caring conversations about the expectations of leadership.

That moment became a turning point. Charlinda chose to volunteer that summer, showing up every day and rediscovering her motivation. She recommitted herself academically, earned Honor Roll, participated in SAT tutoring at Branches, and went on to serve the next two summers as a Summer Shade Guide, this time truly leading and mentoring younger students.

Charlinda will graduate in June and plans to begin her college journey at Miami Dade College with the goal of transferring to a four-year university. Her story reflects the impact of consistent mentorship and support. Through every transition, Branches remained a steady presence, helping Charlinda turn challenges into growth and leadership.
