Our History
Branches Florida City, circa 2000
The Trish and Dan Bell Family Branches Center – Florida City Campus which opened in the Fall of 2014
The new playground, eagerly awaited by the Florida City students, was constructed in May of 2015. The Shade System was added in early 2018
Branches, formerly Miami Urban Ministries, was established in 1973 as the urban and social justice agency of what is now the South East District of the United Methodist Church. Up until 1999, Branches focused on grassroots organizing, advocacy and working with community members who were disadvantaged and/or experiencing social injustice. During this time, Branches focused resources in the areas of social crisis, immigration, housing, hospice care and hurricane relief, among others.
In 2000 when Mr. Brent McLaughlin moved from being a volunteer to President & CEO, Branches embarked on developing and implementing programs that addressed the root causes of poverty and immediate and critical needs. Headquartered in a small office in Coconut Grove, Branches focused on its economic development programs by launching the ASSETS Small Business Development program and Thanksgiving meal deliveries. Branches was then introduced to a wonderful children’s program being run out of the Florida City United Methodist Mission by Mrs. Kim Torres. Mrs. Torres came to Florida City as a missionary after Hurricane Andrew, now 33 years ago, and was providing afterschool and youth development services. Mr. McLaughlin was so impressed with her program that he offered to take it in under Branches and help secure more funding to support it.
In 2004, Branches was awarded its first contract from The Children’s Trust to serve 100 students at Branches Florida City. In 2005, Trish and Dan Bell made an initial $400,000 matching grant commitment which proved to be transformational for Branches.
A couple years later, Branches South Miami also began serving children and youth. In 2009, Branches was selected to house and operate the United Way Center for Financial Stability at its new HQ location in North Miami, also known as Branches Lakeview, to provide high quality financial wellness services. In 2013, Branches Lakeview expanded to also serve children and youth from that surrounding neighborhood.
In 2023, Branches celebrated its 50th Anniversary and today in 2026, Branches serves over 15,000 individuals per year, in particular, providing in-depth services for nearly 550 students and their families at all 3 of its locations. Thanks to the Bells’ long term philanthropic support, numerous generous donors, and many partners, Branches is able to provide truly life-changing opportunities to hardworking families and their children to help break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Here’s to many more years of changing lives!

Frahim: A Journey Rooted in Opportunity
Frahim as a Branches’ Summer Shade Camp Guide in the summer of 2025
Frahim at Branches’ Career Speed Networking Night on October 2025
Now a high school senior, Frahim has been part of Branches Florida City since Kindergarten. Over the years we’ve watched him grow into a confident and compassionate leader. Raised by a strong single mother, he faced many challenges early on, but Branches became his home, a place of stability, love, and opportunity.
He has participated in almost every Branches program: after-school enrichment, Friday Youth Nights, Oasis Spring Break Camp, and Summer Shade Camp. Last summer, Frahim served as a Summer Shade Camp Guide, leading a group of Kindergarteners with patience, humor, and heart. This year, as a senior, he earned the role of Grow Guide, where he now mentors younger students throughout the school year and helps them with their academics while pouring into them the same love he once received. He calls this work “the joy of my life.”
Frahim has shown incredible growth in confidence, responsibility, and maturity, advocating for himself, encouraging his peers, and staying committed to his goals. After graduation, he plans to join the Army and later become a police officer in his community.
At a recent Branches’ Career Speed Networking event, he connected with a local police officer whose story deeply inspired him, affirming his desire to serve others with compassion and integrity.
After 12 years with Branches, Frahim’s journey is a powerful reminder of why our work matters:
When young people are surrounded by consistent love, guidance, and opportunity, they thrive. We cannot wait to see the incredible future ahead of him as he takes the next step toward serving his country by joining the military after graduation.

From AI to ROI: Future-Proofing Businesses, Fueling Growth
Branches’ CEO Brent McLaughlin kicking off the 1st Annual Branches BE ONE Micro-Business Summit & Expo.
Several entrepreneurs attending the Summit. Pictured in the center is Director of Branches’ Micro-Business Program, Steve Arman.
On September 4, 2025, Branches made history by hosting our first-ever BE ONE Micro-Business Summit & Expo at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami Gardens. Theinaugural event, themed Future-Proof Your Business in the Age of AI, welcomed more than 100 entrepreneurs and 15+ expert speakers for a day of insight, strategy, and forward-thinkinginnovation.
Designed and led by Program Director Steve Arman and a committee of select Micro-Businesses, the Summit equipped entrepreneurs with practical tools to leverage AI, streamline operations, increase revenue, and scale confidently. Sessions like “The AI Tsunami” and “Late Adopters Beware” challenged attendees to evaluate how emerging technology is reshaping business. Throughout the day, participants engaged in meaningful conversations, asked thoughtful questions, and left with clear, actionable next steps. A special thank you to Barry University and its AI Center for their incredible partnership!
For Branches, the Summit represents more than an event. It reflects our commitment to economic mobility. For over 20 years, our Micro-Business Program has empowered entrepreneurs with coaching, financial education, and accountability. This Summit marked an important step forward, ensuring small businesses are prepared to compete and grow in an AI-driven economy.
Daniel Bach, founder of UB Recovery, embodies that impact. When Daniel joined the program in 2022, he was operating as a team of one. Through consistent engagement with Branches’ training and coaching, he strengthened his financial strategy, refined operations, and scaled with intention.
Today, he leads a team of six and operates a disciplined, growth-oriented company. UB Recovery identifies overpaid utility charges and secures refunds, helping clients save 7–10% on electricity and up to 18% on natural gas costs. Now generating approximately $460,000 in annual revenue, Daniel stands as one of the program’s top-performing entrepreneurs and a strong contender to become its first $1 million business.
From innovation to measurable growth, this is what happens when entrepreneurs are equipped with the right tools and support. Click here to see the 2025 Summit & Expo Recap Video!

Volunteering at Branches
THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERING
Volunteers play a meaningful role in advancing Branches’ work each year. Hundreds of individuals shared their time by supporting students after school, assembling snack packs, serving meals, and helping families through the VITA program to access critical tax refunds.
Their service also extended beyond daily programs. Volunteers delivered Thanksgiving meals, wrapped gifts for the Under the Tree toy shops, and helped beautify Branches’ sites. Through thousands of hours of service, volunteers built skills, formed connections, and supported stronger communities.

Our Events
MLK Day of Service
On January 20, 2025, Branches honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a community-wide day of service in partnership with AmeriCorps, Volunteer Florida, and local organizations.
At Branches Florida City, volunteers completed painting, minor repairs, and beautification projects at local schools and community spaces, including Homestead Middle School and Florida City Elementary, with support from Mandarin United Methodist Church. In South Miami, Branches partnered with the City of South Miami during its MLK Freedom Breakfast, where volunteers assisted with event service and Branches students performed in celebration of Dr. King’s dream. At Branches Lakeview, volunteers beautified Lakeview Elementary and the Branches site with support from Unity on the Bay, Wells Fargo and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Pi Delta Omega Chapter.
These efforts were made possible through the dedication of volunteers, AmeriCorps members, and community partners who honored Dr. King’s vision through service.
Branches’ 9th Annual Back to School Bash brought community partners together for an evening focused on preparing students for a strong start to the school year. Held at the University of Miami Newman Alumni Center, the event welcomed more than 150 guests who worked together to assemble over 550 backpacks filled with essential school supplies for Branches students.
In total, the backpacks and supplies represented more than $100,000 in resources returned directly to the community. The event high-lighted the impact made possible through the generosity of volunteers, sponsors, in-kind donors, and local restaurant partners commi-tted to educational opportunity.
The evening also celebrated BB Americas as the 2025 Herbert C. Parlato Volunteer Award recipient, highlighting their long-standing partnership and hands-on approach to service.
Thank you to our Gold Star Sponsors, Aetna, Bean Automotive Group, Boeing, Bradesco Bank, Jeannette & Remy Dou, Juneau Construction Company and The Templeton Family Foundation, and in-kind donors for making this event another success!
In 2025, Branches celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Thanksgiving Meal Delivery program. Operating from seven sites across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, more than 1,100 volunteers prepared and delivered over 6,400 complete Thanksgiving meals to individuals and families in need.
This milestone year reflected the strength of long-standing community support, with volunteers spanning generations, some returning after decades of service, others joining for the first time. More than a holiday meal, the program provides dignity, connection, and access to additional Branches resources for families across the community.
Thank you to our 25th Anniversary Sponsor, Darrell Windle & Dave Samber; Top Turkey Sponsors, Alan Goldfarb, P.A., Publix Supermarket Charities, and Unity on the Bay; and our Harvest Sponsors, Aetna, Amazon, Annie and Tom Tannehill, BankUnited, The Batchelor Foundation, BB Americas, Bradesco Bank, Catalyst Pharmaceuticals, City National Bank, Dade County Federal Credit Union, The Green Family Foundation, The Kirk Foundation, Miami Vineyard, Molina Healthcare, The Templeton Family Foundation, VITAS, and many more.
This holiday season, Branches celebrated 10 years of its Under the Tree Toy Shops, a beloved program that allows parents to purchase brand-new toys for their children at discounts of more than 90%, while preserving dignity and choice.
Hosted across all three Branches sites, including our new home in South Miami, families were welcomed into festive spaces filled with holiday music, treats, and volunteers who wrapped each gift.More than 200 families participated, with over 2,000 toys available across the sites. In addition to toys, youth received Branches-branded merchandise and gift cards.
A heartfelt thank you to our Angel Sponsors, The Alvarez Family, The Batchelor Foundation, The Lopez Family, The Templeton Family Foundation, and the many donors and volunteers who make this holiday tradition possible each year.
