Branches is proud to be the Miami-Dade County lead agency for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. In the 2016 tax season alone, Branches and its partners helped prepare 9,845 tax returns, securing almost $11.5 million in tax refunds for our local community.
VITA offers free tax help to people who earn approximately $54,000 annually or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing. Our volunteers and staff can help filers check if they qualify for special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
Individuals who earn $62,000 annually or less may file their own taxes for free at www.myfreetaxes.com/uwcfs. Branches also hosts a number of VITA sites across the region from January to April which provides year round services through the United Way Center for Financial Stability located at Branches Lakeview and Branches Florida City. Individuals may also call 211 to locate other VITA sites which may be more convenient. For many people unfiled taxes from past years can become a significant issue and Branches can file up to three (3) years of back taxes in addition to the current tax year.
Current year filers can also prepare their own taxes for free through a secure and cobranded tax site through October 15th of each year.
